Hays Nature Preserve is a very inspiring protected green space where you can relax or enjoy many activities including: fishing, picnicking, leisurely hikes taking in the sights and sounds or a vigorous run on the trails.
During 2010-2011 many new events and activities will come to the Preserve, including: Art Parties, Yoga by the River, Preserve Pals and a variety of themed guided hikes. Soon visitors and passersby will also notice a nature playground developing amidst the trees near the entrance.
Things to enjoy at the Preserve on the Trails:
- Horseback Riding
- Mountain Biking on the Trails
- Running
- Hiking
Hays Nature Preserve will continue to develop new trails to accommodate horseback riding, mountain biking, running and hiking. Many people come down to the Preserve to fish, and others to picnic or read a book by the Flint River.
A few things to take note of:
Hunting is not allowed.
Dogs are allowed but must be leashed to protect the wildlife.
Restoration
In the Preserve the greatest threat to habitat diversity is the invasion of privet (Ligustrum sinense). Volunteers have been a tremendous help in keeping the privet under control. In the coming months we will begin an aggressive yet environmental approach to irradiating invasive plant species. Once the forest understory has been opened up new trees and shrubs will come in. Native trees, shrubs and wildflowers will be planted in select places. A list of native trees and shrubs is available by contacting Operation Green Team.
Education
Long-range plans for the Preserve include a Watershed Education Center at the heart of the Preserve. In the interim, Operation Green Team will provide programs on site under the wild blue until facilities are constructed. After all, great outdoors has a lot to offer.
