WHO DOES A DEPARTMENT GET HELP FROM WHEN THEY WANT TO BUILD A NEW FACILITY OR REMODEL AN EXISTING BUILDING?

In the City of Huntsville – the answer is Facilities Projects.   This department is staffed with Construction Project Managers trained in all aspects of construction and skilled in developing and coordinating new and remodeled construction jobs.

WHO ARE THE CUSTOMERS FOR FACILITIES PROJECTS?

The major customers for Facilities Projects are other City of Huntsville Departments, who have been funded for major capital improvements.  For some Customers the opportunity to remodel an office or build a new facility comes only once or twice in a career.  The professional Construction Project Manager’s skills in the construction business enable the Customer Department to concentrate on its primary department goals, while leaving the day-to-day construction issues in capable Construction Project Managers’ hands.  Other departments (like the Department of Recreation and Landscape Management) are “regular customers” as Facilities Projects each year works with them to manage the park and recreation improvements funded by the Capital Improvements Project budget.

DOES FACILITIES PROJECTS WORK WITH NON-CITY GROUPS?

Yes!  The City of Huntsville is represented by Facilities Projects in construction projects and developments involving City Departments and Entrepreneurs/Developers.   We also work with the Downtown Redevelopment Agency and Public Building Authority.     When requested, Facilities Projects also handles construction bidding and project management for city-funded agencies (like Constitution Hall Village, Historic Huntsville Depot, Ice Complex, and Convention and Visitors Bureau.)

One of our biggest jobs recently was coordination with Inkana and the Downtown Redevelopment Association to build the Garage in the Colonial Bank Building.   This Garage now provides parking facilities for the City of Huntsville employees.  The Parking Division and Facilities Projects continue to work with other Developers interested in building new projects which could include a parking garage in the downtown area.

WHAT ARE RECENT EXAMPLES OF MAJOR PROJECTS MANAGED FOR RECREATION?

John Hunt Park Softball Field - Fencing, Dugouts, Concrete Improvements

Sherwood Park– Demolished old park and redesigned and built a more “neighborhood oriented” park complete with new pavilion, horseshoe pits, playground equipment and walking track.

Joe Davis Stadium - Developed specifications and coordinated replacement of 1800 stadium seats.

California Street and Kent Robertson Parks - Rebuilt and Resurfaced  Tennis Courts

Aquatic Center – Replaced interior ceiling

New Gymnasiums and Recreation Centers at Optimist Park and Fern Bell Park

John Hunt Park Soccer Fields and Team Locker Facilities –Completed for State Soccer Tournament.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST JOB FACILITIES PROJECTS HAS COORDINATED?

Beginning in 1996 Facilities Projects worked with Municipal Courts, Police Administration, Jail Administration, and Fire Administration to design, bid, construction, furnish, and occupy the Municipal Justice Public and Safety Center on Wheeler Avenue.   This 100,000 sq. ft. facility houses four major city functions including the housing for all City Jail inmates.    This landmark facility will serve our community for an estimated 30 or more years.

WHAT ARE EXAMPLES OF REMODELING EXISTING FACILITIES?

The Public Safety Academy (Fire and Police Training Facility) Sparkman Drive – New Roof and New Heating and Cooling System.

Public Services Building Remodeling - First Floor – Remodeled for Natural Resources

Portions of First and Second Floor – Engineering Department

Portion of First Floor – Fire Marshals’ Office
