About The Human Relations Commission

Who is on the Human Relations Commission?- The HRC consists of eleven voting members and other liaison members.  Each of the five City Council members appoints a resident of his/her district to a place on the Commission.  The Mayor appoints six members.  All appointees serve four-year terms.  The Mayor is encouraged to appoint representatives of ethnic, racial and other diverse organizations.  Ex: NCCJ, Cultural Alliance, One Huntsville, Interfaith Mission Service, diversity dinners, Hispanic or other ethnic groups,  The International Service Council.  The Huntsville Police Department, Redstone Arsenal and the local chapter of the NAACP, each have a non-voting liaison member.

 

Any resident of Huntsville may register a concern about alleged discrimination with the HRC, either in person, by mail or via the telephone, as long as the situation has not been referred to the legal system.  Non-city residents may register concerns if the offensive action is alleged to have occurred in the city.  A concern must be filed with the HRC within a reasonable time of the concern or offense.
