Meet the Staff
Director - Karen L. Hill, D.V.M.
Karen pursued a career in veterinary medicine because of her passion for animals. She is a 1992 graduate of Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Until accepting the position as Director of Huntsville Animal Services in the fall of 2002, Karen practiced small animal medicine and surgery. Currently, her children are the three pictured dogs, “Ivy,” a 10 year old Standard Poodle, “Thistle,” a 2 year old Standard Poodle, and “Heather,” a 4 year old Siberian husky. So, why would a veterinarian accept such a different career path? Simply, to help! Huntsville Animal Services is doing an exceptionally good job in all its many areas of services to the community, but irresponsible pet owners continue to cause our jobs to be much harder. Daily our staff is emotionally taxed with managing the lives of these dogs and cats that cannot be placed in responsible homes. The problems are hard and the solutions are even harder. Please help us by being a responsible pet owner and encouraging your friends and neighbors to do the same. Together we can make a difference in Madison County.

Humane Educator - Mary J. Ultz
Mary comes to Huntsville from the Metro Atlanta area. She worked for Gwinnett County as an animal control officer. She then went to work for Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office as the only animal control officer in the county. She graduated from Northeast Georgia Police Academy, Academy Class #154, in April 1999. She continued doing animal control, but as a Certified Law Enforcement Officer. She was the first deputy in Forsyth County to charge people with state cruelty laws. She was awarded the “Outstanding Employee Award” by the Southeastern Animal Control Association for 1998-1999. She was honored as “Outstanding Officer of the Year” for the Support Division of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office in 1999. Mary is very proud of the fact that her state charges on animal cases have returned a 100% conviction rate. She left Forsyth County to get married and relocate in Athens, Alabama in 2001.
