The Huntsville Planning Commission, established by the Huntsville City Council on August 12, 1948, advises the Mayor, City Council, and City Departments on broad planning goals, policies, and plans for the physical development of the city.

The local ordinance creating the Huntsville Planning Commission authorized, empowered, and directed the commission to make and adopt a plan that provides for the physical development of the City of Huntsville and to create a zoning plan. The ordinance also granted powers and authorities to the body consistent with the State's enabling legislation for planning commissions, approved by the State legislature on September 14, 1935.

The Planning Commission is comprised of twelve members that are appointed by the Mayor and City Council. Members of the Planning Commission also serve on the Zoning Subcommittee and/or the Subdivision Subcommittee. These subcommittees review specific development issues and provide policy recommendations to the full Planning Commission.
