Ice & Snow Removal
Each fall, the Public Works Department
prepares for ice and snow during the upcoming winter by evaluating its equipment and materials
and determining the appropriate stock levels for salt and rock/sand mixture. Salt is used on city
streets while a salt/sand mixture is used on bridges and overpasses. Salt cannot be used because
of its corrosive effects.
The city has the following equipment for use during ice and snow.
Four salt spreaders
Two rock/sand spreaders
Four snow plows
Three motor graders
Three rubber-tired loaders
Ten additional contracted motor graders as needed
If ice and snow should occur, the first priority is streets around hospitals,
fire stations, and police precincts. These are followed by high-elevation areas, bridges on city
streets, and major arterial streets. After these minor arterial streets will be cleared.
It is our policy that no residential streets or driveways will be cleared.
If citizens wish to risk travel during ice and snow, it is their responsibility to clear their
own driveways.
In the event of significant snowfall, garbage service may be discontinued.
In such a case, local radio and television stations (as well as this Website) will supply appropriate
and timely information.
