Waste Management: Schedule here

Garbage collection is the collection of paper products (including cardboard boxes) and household food waste — generally, anything that comes out of the kitchen or bathroom. Garbage is collected once a week for residential customers, and the fee is $16.50 per month. Additional 90 gallon containers can be obtained for an additional $3 per month. However, any additional containers (or containers swapped out for a larger or smaller size) must be kept a minimum of one year.

Guidelines

1 To insure the collection of your garbage, please follow these guidelines:

2 Containers must be placed at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the day of collection.

3 All customers must use the 60 or 90 gallon container provided for them by the
City of Huntsville.

4 Containers must NOT contain debris other than household garbage.

5 Containers must NOT contain unacceptable or hazardous waste such as paint, chemicals, solvents, dead animals, rocks, dirt, construction debris, or medical or biological waste.

6 Containers must be placed at least five feet away from obstructions such as mailboxes, utility poles, or parked cars.

7 Containers must be placed no more than two feet from the curb or road with the arrows on the lid pointing toward the street.

Automated Garbage Collection

All residential customers are utilizing an automated garbage cart. Automated collection is different from the traditional collection process. With automated collection, a vehicle equipped with a hydraulic arm drives up to the cart, grabs it, and dumps the contents into the hopper of the truck without the driver having to leave the cab. All of Huntsville's garbage routes are fully automated (a traditional rear-load packer using hydraulic flippers). It is planned to have all garbage routes automated within the next two years. Automated collection has become an industry standard in the Public Works field because it is safer and more efficient. The automated process requires only one employee as compared to three on the traditional collection crew, and worker's compensation claims are reduced by the fact that workers do not come in contact with the waste.

Household Hazardous Waste

Household hazardous waste products include household cleaners and chemicals, lawn and garden poisons, batteries (household and car), paints and related products, pool chemicals, any type of solvents or acids, and automotive fluids. You can safely dispose of these products by taking them to the collection center listed below on the first Saturday of every month from 8:00 a.m. till noon. Solid Waste Disposal Authority Landfill, 4100 Leeman Ferry Road at the Intersection of Johnson Road and Leeman Ferry Road.) If you need more information, you can call the Solid Waste Disposal Authority at 880-6054.
